"every woman i meet wants to have sex with me but i'm too depressed to maintain an erection and i want to throw up and kill myself" is one of my favorite character archetypes. elle fanning gives a better performance here than some a-list actors give in their whole career. sofia has such a soft touch, this movie is devastating.

    Creed III

    ★★★★

Michael B. Jordan doing an Aronofsky (stealing the best bits of his movie from anime). This was a big step up from Creed 2, thanks to the improved direction, more interesting story construction, and Johnathan Majors(!). I'd like to see MBJ continue to hang around in the director's chair.

  • Boston Strangler

    Boston Strangler

    ★★

Seems like an interesting case but the movie is really surface level, plus it's cribbing all of its visual language from Fincher and doing just an okay job. Love to see Keira Knightly and Carrie Coon though.

Choreography and MacClaine are incredible of course, but Fosse's command of the cinematography and editing are incredible from a first timer with no movie making experience to speak of.

    Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

    ★★

Quietly deranged filmmaking, as you'd expect from late period Ollie. Unfortunately the movie is pretty limp, Douglas doesn't even do any cocaine.

    ★★

Never in my life have I been so confused and disgusted. There's probably a good movie in here somewhere, and on some level I feel bad about not enjoying a movie this depraved and audacious, but it just doesn't come together.

    Hannibal

    ★★★★

Decidedly not Silence of the Lambs which I dig. Makes for three pretty interesting Hannibal Lector movies in a row, a trend I assume stops with Red Dragon. You can tell Se7en was released in between Silence and this, though it still has the Ridley panache. Weird that this movie doesn't get talked about.

  • Creed II

    Creed II

    ★★

I've never been more impressed with Coogler's talent. There are some fun ideas here but the structure just bleeds any joy or energy from the movie. Honestly I was most interested in what was going on with the Drago family.

    We did our job.

Maybe the perfect story for Clint to tell. His vision of America is frankly more than we deserve. Everytime an American thanked Sully I got a little choked up. Also, and I don't pretend to be a Hanks expert, but this has to be up there in terms of performance for him right? When he gets the final count I can feel his relief, it's incredible.

maybe we're all the children of murderous savages, eating our own shit and drinking out own piss, hurtling through space to certain death with nothing but the fuckbox to keep us company
