I'm still quite a bit of a Hamaguchi skeptic, if I'm being honest. Certainly among the most confident filmmakers working around with a certainty on what he wants to talk about, but also a need to make every single character talk about this in the bluntest and most direct terms that I just don't find as engaging as parsing out ambiguous characters.
But the four stars? That's because after the third and best segment of Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy delivered a story that knew how to use singular colors against neutral palettes in emotionally potent ways, it's nice to have 3 very narratively full hours of that shit. So a skeptic with an open mind, shall we say.
