Ready or Not

Ready or Not ★★★

Somebody I usually trust on matters about this swears its the projection that's why the coloring looks like a puddle of piss but it's really hard to believe that when the rest of the movie's sequences involving whites and blues are pretty damn strong visually. I'll leave that aside.

In any case, I'm sure I'd have loved this movie more with less "what does it mean to be a family?" and more frightened and erratic violence (of which I say there is enough to give this a passing grade), particularly since the brutal last half is where the movie hits its best notes (to the degree that two late character turns work because they feel like a response to the moment's tension rather than the writing giving us any reason to buy the characters themselves).

I will also give it this: most of the cast is made up of actors I've never cared for and they're all doing their career-best to turn in shallow and vicious "evil rich people" tropes. The scowling aunt, the bitter alcoholic, and the shrill cokehead are my favorites in that order.

It's much much much better than You're Next. This shouldn't even be a conversation.
