This is the 1,500th movie I've marked as watched on Letterboxd. What a delight.
I loved this movie so much, it's one of those films that I just want to live inside. This is the rare occasion where I wish a movie was actually a mini-series, purely because I love the characters so much and want to spend more time with them. A fantastic movie.
I was honestly dreading this, due to both the uncomfortable premise (white man is raised by a poor Black family without realizing he is adopted) and the fact that I don't typically find Steve Martin all that funny.
Obviously, there are racial elements that have aged very poorly, but overall I found it to be a charming and funny watch. The first half worked much better for me than the second, but I find comfort and enjoyment in these late 70s/early 80s comedies.
The kind of movie that cites Wikipedia as a primary source. If you've read the premise of this movie and watched the trailer, you've already got 98% of the entertainment value.
