A very slick, slow burning crime noir tale from the L.A underworld. Ryan Gosling is especially captivating in the lead role as the mysterious, almost machine-like Driver, who's sparks of humanity are ignited once he meets his female neighbour and her young son. This unfortunately sets his life on a downward spiral, along with those of his criminal co-horts, as things escalate beyond his usually steady control.
The film comes across as a very linear dream, like David Lynch with a clear narrative, and, like the films of Lynch, is interrupted from time to time by explosive outbursts of extreme violence.
Not an action film (although there are action sequences), and not a thriller (but has plenty of thrilling moments), more of a very dark, engrossing drama.
