Phantom Thread

My interest in Paul Thomas Anderson has largely waned as his enduring fascination with unsympathetic, emotionally volatile, control-freak narcissists has increasingly dominated his work. Unsurprisingly then, I found little to like—but quite a bit to respect—in a film where most of the characters are unsympathetic, emotionally volatile, control-freak narcissists. As usual, the bleakness is ameliorated slightly by Anderson’s absurdist humor, but there’s only so much existential-horror-as-comedy I’m willing to accept.
