• Man Up

    Man Up

    ★★★½

Simon Pegg and Lake Bell, with her impeccable English accent, provide a convincing chemistry in this quirky British rom-com that, whilst following a familiar narrative, manages to hold on to some elements of originality.

  • LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation

    LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation

    ★★★

All the moments not involving the main sequel characters are the most enjoyable here in what is essentially a trilogy of stories told by ghosts of some familiar Star Wars characters. There are definite laugh-out-loud moments, but for me ‘Palpatine’ will always be the best thing to come out of these LEGO specials.

    Sing

    ★★★½

A very good animated film that has a respectable moral to its narrative even though the plot runs relatively thin. A solid selection of songs also helps enhance the experience.

  • The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

    ★★★

    Extended Editions

One thing I wasn’t expecting from this rewatch of The Hobbit films was to enjoy it more than I remembered. With regards to the middle third of J.R.R. Tolkien’s book, this sequel follows a respectable enough timeline. I’d forgotten about the flashback scene at the start with ‘Gandalf’ and ‘Thorin’s initial meet, which I think is a solid addition to the narrative. There’s some really good set designs here too, notably ‘Beorn’s homestead and Lake Town.

  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

    ★★★½

    Extended Edition

The time finally arrived today when I committed to reading J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth works, well the 3 main books anyway. I decided to carry this process out in the same vein that I’ve recently been doing with the Harry Potter series of novels and films, that is complete a book then watch the corresponding film. With this in mind I split Tolkien’s The Hobbit into 3 parts and will watch each instalment from the trilogy as I complete each…

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

    ★★★★

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) was and still is one of my favourite films from the franchise, but having recently read the novel, now one of my favourite books period, it became clear relatively early on that interesting and arguably relevant elements were missing from this adaptation. My previous comments regarding the construction of the screenplay still stand, but my God they must’ve deliberated for days over the exceptional source material on hand that was ultimately dropped.

  • The Sentinel

    The Sentinel

    ★★½

I had convinced myself that this was going to be right up my street, that it would be some next level feature length episode of 24 with ‘Jack Bauer’ doing his thing alongside Michael Douglas, one of my favourite actors ever. Unfortunately it felt more like a filler episode with its fast paced action that didn’t leave enough time to develop it’s rushed and unconvincing plot. Sad times. Still, I did get to hear Kiefer Sutherland say “damn it” once again, so every cloud…

  • In a Heartbeat

    In a Heartbeat

    ★½

If you’re looking for quality in a movie, you’ll be taking a huge gamble trying to find it in a Danny Dyer film. On the rare occasion it pays off, Human Traffic (1999), The Football Factory (2004) and Severance (2006) are all examples of this, sadly Bloodshot (aka In a Heartbeat) (2013) was not one of those occasions. It can be refreshing to see Dyer in a non-gangster based picture due to typecasting, unfortunately the plot here is weak and the supporting performances overplayed. In fact it’s Dyer who is arguably the best thing about this.

Micky Flanagan - An' Another Fing Live

Micky Flanagan is a consistently good comic, which is reflected in this stand up show. However, whilst this definitely has its moments he does fall short of his superior earlier work.

  • Bonded by Blood 2

    Bonded by Blood 2

    ★★½

Bonded by Blood 2 (2016) starts with elements of potential including a handful of respectable performances, but in the end it just milks the legacy characters and infamous incident of its equally uninspiring predecessor

  • Bonded by Blood

    Bonded by Blood

    ★★½

Yet another take on the Rettendon murders and fuelled by the same below par screenwriting, performances and direction as most of the Rise of the Footsoldier franchise, which is also set in and around the infamous and fatal ambush almost 30 years ago. Neil Maskell’s convincing turn is the only highlight for me, but is overshadowed by a substandard movie with an anticlimactic ending. Not a patch on Essex Boys (2000).
