20th Century Women

20th Century Women ★★★★

If Mike Mills' Beginners was about fatherhood, then 20th Century Women is about motherhood, or more broadly, womanhood. It's moving, empathetic, and soulful. Every single cast member is pitch perfect and together they do something magical. This is the kind of movie, like Beginners that feels like a diary entry or home movie. It's something that makes you feel safer, like your sadness is shared.

While I adored the movie, I think it's worth noting that this is a movie that is predominately about women written and directed by a man. I've watched a lot of films directed by women this year and they always portray women better than men are able to. It's just a fact. So, I do wonder what this movie might have been like with a female writer/director.

However, I still thoroughly enjoyed it and was wholly entranced by the world Mills created. Annette Bening was great, of course. But Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning were the fucking stars of this movie. They killed every scene they had.

I can't wait to see this again.
