Oh how I wish I'd gotten the movie I saw in the trailer. Generally, this is probably as good as it gets for a Marvel movie this far into their manufactured industrial line of superhero installments. There's no doubt in my mind that this would have benefitted from a narrower scope; everything that happens on Sakaar is wildly entertaining, funny, tense, etc etc - the kind of stuff you want from these movies!! But as fun as it is to watch Cate Blanchett collect a big paycheck, it's not worth it for how much it drags down the rest of the movie.
It's an uneven movie full of things that work until they don't. That said, Waititi sneaks in enough of his own charms and quirks to make it feel fresh, which is an improvement considering that most of these flicks are dead on arrival.
