If you like naval battles from the 1800s, grog, hubris, bug puns, Russel Crowe or the ocean, Master and Commander is the movie for you.
I don't have much more to say about it. For my own personal enjoyment, this really should be a three. But it honestly deserves more than that. Master and Commander is not a movie I would have sat down to watch by my own choice and it's not a movie I ever need to see again. But it's good enough that I feel dishonest rating it anything lower than a four.
It's well made, though. It's a maritime epic, complete with references to the Bible, The Odyssey and Rime of the Ancient Mariner. What was especially cool to me were the sets. I mean we're on a ship for the whole runtime and you never feel choked out by the locations. No tedious CGI or eyesores of any kind. Pretty cool.
Like I said above, if this sort of thing is your cup of tea, you're really in for a treat. Plus, there are some pretty hot puns in this movie. And I'm a sucker for a good pun.
