Romain Gavras has been an anomaly for the past couple of years. Going from directing iconic music videos (M.I.A’s Bad Girls, Born Free) to directing a Shakespearean modern tragedy is completely insane.

Athena is entirely beholden to it’s insane camerawork. Most of the film is directed in long, spread out tracking shots. Our main characters slide in and out of the frame, to capture the high energy of the war.

The main plot of this is about two brother’s who…

    Moonage Daydream

David Bowie’s ego and cadence is all displayed in this unconventional documentary/concert film. Brett Morgen heavily uses psychedelic imagery, effects, and immersive sound mix to tell Bowie’s life through his eyes. Normally we would get the standard interviews from other musicians or historian. But instead, this doc decides to tell the tale through sound/video recordings of Bowie.

Personally, it works better that way. As much as I love the standard documentary style, Bowie is a hard subject to dive into…

I’d watch Home Alone with Sarah Paulson.

I don’t know where to begin. It’s been taking me a real long time to process my bisexuality in a broad sense. Yes, I did come out around high school. I’ve had wonderful relationships with other guys. But, there’s still something that’s emotionally draining me. Coming from a reclusive family, when I came out, I completely went through my β€œslut phase”. Hooking up with guys and women, navigating through a place where I…

Hassan has a great eye for poetic imagery and black/white naturalistic cinematography. It's something I can't really grasp my fingers on. Accepting you fate in the world or questioning it. This is entirely reliant on the idea of controlling your thought process and self-control. And also mostly understanding the gravity of the world. Life sometimes throws curveballs at you and just have to take it, grow, and learn from it.

Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn

To open your film with an unsimulated sex scene is incredibly bold and insane. Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn recently won the Golden Bear at the 2021 Berlin International Film Festival. I’m not entirely familiar with this director’s work nor the Romanian New Wave movement. This was a wild ride to uncover. The first part of the film is about a teacher who is caught up with a sex tape scandal. We follow her through the streets of Bucharest,…

So let me get this straight.

The actual history behind the Dahomey Tribe stems from them owning slaves. In a media literacy sense, you have to understand the repercussions of portraying these people as the β€œheroes” of the story. Hollywood has always entertained the idea of β€œBased on A True Story”. So why is it now controversial to make a Hollywood adaptation of this tribe? Well. Most of the controversial discourse lies beneath the racism and misogyny of the alt-right…
