Hereditary is a psychologically haunting and masterfully made horror movie. I’ve heard nothing but good things about this film so I obviously went into this with very high expectations. I was truly blown away at how phenomenal this film turned out to be. It’s such an emotionally and eerily engaging film. This is no doubt my favorite horror film I’ve watched for the first time this Halloween/October. Also this easily has made it into my top 5 favorite horror films of all time. The plot is great it’s a brilliant and extremely engaging story. It’s such a thought provoking and deep story with many layers, it’s a film that seriously makes you sit down and reflect on every little detail of the story.
The emotional aspects of the story are brilliant this film conveys a range of all types of emotion. This is also one of the most engaging and captivating films I’ve ever seen. I had my eyes glued to the screen the whole time. The pacing is fantastic since it’s such an engaging film there really isn’t a single boring or slow moment. This film feels like it’s only an hour long when it’s really two hours long.
The acting is phenomenal Toni Colette gives a phenomenal performance. She gives a breath taking and emotionally intense performance, she truly should have been nominated and won Best Actress at the Oscars. Alex Wolff gives a fantastic performance, he gives an obviously passionate and memorable performance. Milly Shapiro, Gabriel Byrne, and Ann Dowd gives great supporting performances as well. The direction is fantastic from Ari Aster, it’s incredible that this was his first feature length film. His direction was very masterful and professional I’m really looking forward to what he makes in the future. He could easily be one of the next big directors.
The script is fantastic it’s a very thought out and thought provoking script. The cinematography is fantastic, this film is full of pretty impressive and memorable shots. The editing is fantastic and the score is fantastic as well. The horror/thrills are fantastic this is probably the scariest film I’ve seen. From the opening scene until the credits role it’s intense and unsettling. This film has all types of scares and frightening moments. There is a ton of shocking and stunning twists as well. One scene about 35 minutes into the film had me in complete shock I actually said “Oh my god” out loud as soon as the scene ended. Also near the end I had to cover my eyes for a few seconds because of how uncomfortable and intense it was getting. The ending is a mind blowing ending that leaves your mind to wonder. Overall Hereditary is an extremely engaging and terrifying film that is a modern horror essential.
