Nominated for 14 Oscars during his career, German-born Willi "William" Wyler (1902-1981) won the Academy Award for Best Director three times and received the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1966. He covered all genres and, although sometimes criticized for a lack of personal style, his massive body of work speaks for itself with classics ranging from adventure to romance to period drama and comedy.
