Really wasn’t digging this for the first 45 or so, I was lowkey getting Free Guy vibes (not actually that bad obviously) but lots of corny hit or miss jokes that people were laughing at and I was like … really? Oddly felt like a movie made for kids that would all of a sudden have a joke about genitals or “beaching someone off” which really threw me for a loop… but I think it gets better as it goes…

Little Fish 2020
“I find myself wondering how to build a future if you keep having to rebuild the past.”
I knew within 15 minutes that this was going to absolutely obliterate me by the end but I did not expect to cry three separate times throughout… this movie really struck a chord with me for a multitude of reasons. I have a love/hate relationship with taking pictures because sometimes just being present in that specific moment is what matters, but on the…

The Nun II 2023
Maybe it was just that I couldn’t have gone into this with lower expectations, but in the landscape of modern horror this really wasn’t that bad at all. The movie is at its best when it opts for slow-to-build scenes of interesting framing, lighting and camerawork, using the nun in creative ways to generate some genuine scares and chilling atmosphere. Conversely, its at its worst when it essentially turns into a shitty comic-book movie, with the nun all of a…

The Vanishing 1988
In many ways, The Vanishing feels like a precursor to some of the best crime mysteries of this generation, with movies like Memories of Murder, Zodiac and even Prisoners all feeling indebted to this film and its impeccable craft. The difference however between those and The Vanishing, and what makes the latter so unique, is that while many films in this genre deal with the who, The Vanishing is much more interested in the why and how. Reminiscent of one of…

Licorice Pizza 2021
I guess racist asian jokes and a creepy relationship between a 28 year old and a 15 year old are cool when an ~auteur~ is behind the camera?
In all seriousness, what the fuck am I missing here? I feel like the people who will have Licorice Pizza as their number one movie of 2021 are the same ones who will criticize something like Last Night in Soho for portraying a problematic era with a certain sense of nostalgia. The…

Wajib 2017
O&O Take Over the World: 30 Days, 30 Countries
Day 4: Palestine
Seeing Wajib with my dad is a priceless experience that I won’t be forgetting any time soon. After finishing, him and I sat around talking about his upbringing, my attachment to my Palestinian roots, and just how much of ourselves we saw in the dynamic between Shadi and Abu Shadi. It reminded me of just how important my Palestinian origin is to my identity, and how powerful it…
