  • Ran

The way Kurosawa expertly balances Shakespearean character development with such beautifully choreographed and haunting battle sequences in Ran never ceases to amaze me. That siege of the castle midway through the film is the very epitome of seriously jaw-dropping, iconic cinema.

  • Nomadland

In a similar vein to Chloé Zhao's previous film The Rider, the deliberate, meditative pacing of Nomadland is at the heart of what you'll either love or hate about this. I think it worked well as an almost subversive Odyssey tale, and the cinematography is unsurprisingly gorgeous.

‪There's a potentially interesting story here, unfortunately let down by clumsy, awkward storytelling and serious pacing and tonal issues.‬

    You Were Never Really Here

Joaquin Phoenix once again shows his versatility in this excellent understated performance in Lynne Ramsay's "post-violent" thriller. The character of Joe is nuanced and full of unresolved mental trauma, with the director excellently showing his brutality alongside his fragility.
