Quite fascinating to see this win the Palme d'Or a year after Shoplifters when they are basically different takes on a similar subject. I think I prefer Koreeda's softer touch (this gets slightly too heavy-handed at times for me), but there's no denying Bong Joon-ho's mise en scène, his ability to blend humour into everything, and his talent for composition. This is so fun until it's not, and then it's thrilling until it's simply tragic. Not everything works (especially towards the end), but it's an overall success. Excellent ensemble cast as well.
