    Memoria 2021

★★★★ Watched by Voice Of The Turtle 10 Apr 2022

An inversion of sound design and narrative. Highlighting changes of sound that embed themselves into the film, making its presence felt while the narrative slowly simmers into the consciousness. Temporal and emotional fragments begins to melt together into landscapes, seeping back into the earth and hidden in plain sight. But, sometimes things are better left unearthed.

  • Cousin Jules

    Cousin Jules 1973

★★★★★ Watched by Voice Of The Turtle 18 Feb 2022

    Film 12/30 of mubi-thon 2022

Cousin Jules acts as a cinematic link between observational documentaries and more sensory anthropologic examinations. The use of stereophonic sound and cinemascope lenses extract a potent sensory experience. The crew captures the traditional rites, rhythmic activities, and objects that define the subject's lives. Life and death are treated with the same patience as brewing a cup of coffee.

The structure plays an integral role as well. Benicheti balances the disintegration of this form of life…

  • Asako I & II

    Asako I & II 2018

★★★★ Watched by Voice Of The Turtle 14 Feb 2022

    Love is a dream.

Asako is a ghost tethered to the past, fighting back against the stream’s current to recapture the spark found with Baku. For most of the film’s runtime Asako is stuck, watching the present rapidly racing downstream. Her friends and loved ones hurt by her emotional resistance. The cruelty and illogical nature of love blinds Asako, as her withdrawn nature exudes a disconnect from the reality that surrounds her. Eventually, what she thinks is the past is…

  • Warsaw Bridge

    Warsaw Bridge 1990

★★★★ Watched by Voice Of The Turtle 13 Feb 2022

    Film 8/30 of Mubi-thon 2022

A film that ditches “traditional narrative” for an impassioned expounding on the love and capabilities of film. Warsaw Bridge unravels akin to a martyoshka doll, as the film’s structure continually offers narratives within narratives. Self-referential in delivery to deconstruct what it means to derive purpose, incept creativity, and conceptualize meaning from art.

The film demands to maintain a coherence of mood in its sardonic yet formalist approach. This keeps everything in an engaging package despite…

  • Instructions for a Light and Sound Machine

Instructions for a Light and Sound Machine 2005

★★★★★ Watched by Voice Of The Turtle 07 Feb 2022 1

    Film 6/30 of Mubi-thon 2022

An all-out assault on the medium of film. Baring the nature of the relationship between audience and frame. Voyeurs peering through the window that traps characters in inescapable worlds of manipulation. The deconstruction of sound and light is a malformed reality, one that spews oblique violence from the core of cinema.
