Taylor Fulton’s review published on Letterboxd:
I’ve been aware that this part of the story doesn’t work, but this time through the murder subplot seems so shoehorned in and unnecessary. Apparently a lot of this material was cut, but why not then just make Reily’s character like a security guard or something? The cop apologist storyline doesn’t do it for me for a few reasons.
It’s obviously too long as well, but honestly every time I watch this I can’t stop thinking about what parts of the story have been cut and how I want more. (How long until they cut the all this material into a 10 part HBO miniseries?) I guess part of this allure is trying to make more sense of a movie that doesn’t quite get there, but has so many compelling moments and performances that it sticks with you more than it should.
