I am a huge FF stan and love the first two VHS flicks, but the third really tonally went off the rails for me and lacked cohesiveness. Still, even that one still had some high points. Needless to say, I was so excited for this, especially given how much I enjoy so many folks involved in this. Lord, I am not sure what everyone else saw, but this did not do any of that. Aside from the outstanding first short and the solid second, this was so off the mark. I'm so sad to say that this i one of my biggest disappointments of this year.

THE NEON DEMON sees Nicolas Winding Refn constructing an increasingly surreal -- and increasingly dangerous -- world of oversaturated beauty. A simple, but ultimately twisted nightmare of a story, Refn's magnetic female-led film is quite enjoyable in its subdued dementedness -- though it is not for everyone. It will most definitely try the patience of those who are expecting a fast-moving psychological thriller or who have no desire to partake in another of Refn's hyper-stylized exercises. If you can stick with it, however, it transcends the veneer of style-as-substance cinema and rises as an especially bizarre and fun treat.
