Fritz Lewis’s review published on Letterboxd:
Not as disappointing as Seven Samurai.
Ran is a film with a large scope, consisting of epic themes, and it has pretty beautiful production, but is very narrow in terms of development, execution, and payoff.
Nakadai is fantastic, and really compliments a leader falling from inherited corruption and power.
The film itself a pretty to look at, well composed and directed work of art, but it's dead weight; tedious as hell with very little involvement.
I appreciated it overall, but it sorely lacked emotional depth or vast meaning to accompany its grand commodities and potential.
