The Card Counter

The Card Counter ★★½

THE CARD COUNTER is a disappointingly mixed outing from Paul Schrader. A thematically rich character study temporarily heightened by moments of meditative brilliance alongside Oscar Issac’s powerhouse performance, it’s hurt by its blind quest to craft a misguidedly dull atmosphere. With stale direction, bland dialogue, a tonally disruptive supporting performance, and atrociously flat lighting, it results in an ultimately forgettable film.
