    High Life

Sci-fi... the most unoriginal, played out genre in Hollywood is completely revolutionised by 72 year old Claire Denis with High Life and if that’s not enough to get you to go see it, let me tell you a little bit more. Explicit isn’t even close to describing this film, Denis pushes boundaries like she hasn’t before and in doing so ensures that you’re along for the dark, starry ride. Visceral storytelling, sharp imagery and cold colours set the tone for…

Lost love or the beginning of something more? Barry Jenkins’ latest masterclass is a beautiful and poignant look at the struggle of which many black people were forced to, and continue to face. Powerful from the get go and never fully allowing you to feel a sense of happiness throughout, it’s a testament to everything wrong with this world and it’s preferential justice system. Regina King & KiKi Layne are stunning throughout, Britell’s score transcends all feelings available to us as…

Balances typical superhero shenanigans, wholesome activity, Sandberg’s signature horror and genuinely gut-punching topics soooooo perfectly to the point where I think I’m willing to say this is the most refreshing take on the superhero genre since Logan. The whole cast shine but none as bright as Jack Dylan Grazer, probably mostly thanks to how brilliantly written his, and quite frankly all the characters are. It does lose itself at times and overstays it’s welcome but I can’t see how you…

Magical, wholehearted, exhilarating fun from top to bottom. Came for Take That’s song Rule The World (got that. It was wonderful.) but stayed for De Niro’s outrageously fantastic performance. It’s basically the equivalent to an adult bedtime story and, excuse my French, fuck it’s a good one at that.

Think you're ready? You aren't. Trust me.

10 years have been leading to this. Leading to sadness, to anger, to confusion. Leading to the gutsiest blockbuster of all time. It doesn't give you room to breathe, not even for a second, and the sheer amount of excitement it brings to the table is off the richter scale. I don't want to say much because it needs a second viewing immediately but one things for sure, Thanos lives up to the hype.

Scene of the year goes to Gambino performing This Is America in sync with warehouse noises while simultaneously being a huge smartass. Give him the Oscar already, cowards.
