Jack’s review published on Letterboxd:
While not Van Sant’s best work it’s arguably his most touching. Rough around the edges and a little uneven but done justice thanks to an incredibly inspired performance by Joaquin Phoenix, his definitive one of 2018 (you heard me). And when it’s not trying to shove it down your throat during emotional scenes, it *really* nails things comedic wise... there’s a KKK joke in here that made the whole theatre burst into laughter, including myself. Jack Black is perfect in this too, basically steals the whole film with 5 minutes screen time.
