it's telling that despite how nihilistic and horrifying this gets, in almost every sense of those words, fincher still makes time for people. on rewatches i always find myself drawn to the quiet scenes of dialogue or introspection that play as interludes to the horror, like all the scenes of characters sitting around, eating food, talking life/philosophy/literature, or that brief, lovely digression into morgan freeman's passion for the library—a montage of calm research and preparation, same as that terrifying opening credit sequence, but in direct opposition of it in tone.
