Paradise Lost 2: Revelations

Paradise Lost 2: Revelations ★★★★½

This is as much about sifting through the explosive aftermath of the first Paradise Lost film as it is a continued examination of the heinous child murders and catching up with the West Memphis Three as they hope to overturn their convictions.

You’d think a true crime sequel wouldn’t have as much to offer as what came before, but this is arguably an even more engrossing exercise now that the major players are established. Second to none is John Mark Byers, stepfather of victim Chris Byers, one of the most colorful and enigmatic subjects to ever flare up the documentary screen—literally, with a can of lighter fluid.

Directors Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, as tenacious as they are fortuitous, continue to sew needle drops courtesy of Metallica. This is punctuated with the heartbreaking use of “Nothing Else Matters,” a feeling that deeply resonates while you’re in the thick of the Paradise Lost trilogy.
