I favor horror/cult classics, but I genuinely just love movies. Movies with heart inform a ton of my love for film.

It Follows 2014
This is one of my favorite urban legend-style horror films. The lack of exposition and detailed plot makes it all the more believable to me; this is happening in Nowhereville, USA, in a sleepy suburb that everyone has lived in or driven by at some point in their lives. The subdued energy gives off a haunted, hopeless feeling and plays well off of the sometimes-bombastic (and excellent) score. It Follows conceives of an evil that is unknowable to human beings. It creeps towards us, forever. All we can do is delay it.

The Brood 1979
The Brood is not one that I would sit down and watch any old time, that's for sure. This seems to be the jumping off point for Cronenberg to really start delving deep into his own psyche to come up with subject matter (this one leans much darker, think Videodrome instead of Shivers). You absolutely can tell he was dealing with his own divorce during this film, because this family trauma hits like a sledgehammer. It's devastating to watch this…

Room 237 2012
I mean, it IS interesting. If you like The Shining (or find Kubrick interesting at all), this is worth a watch. Some of the ideas are fun to think about, while others are posited in an unclear fashion and followed up on. It's an interesting watch, but I don't know that I'd return to this one.

Phantasm 1979
Phantasm is a beautifully strange film that simmers with delectable gore and fever-dream scenes. Below the surface, this movie deals with family grief in a way that speaks to me personally. The juxtaposition between the family drama and the pure strangeness of the plot somehow makes it all the more compelling.
The score is perfect; that cascading piano enters my head often and sticks around. The iconic scene in town where the Tall Man is walking in slow motion and…

Shivers 1975
Shivers is damn near a masterpiece, and I'm kicking myself for not watching it sooner. The claustrophobic feel, both in setting and some of the camera angles, worked wonders for the film. There was a palpable sense of tension that was pervasive throughout the runtime, and lead actor Paul Hampton does a fantastic job of keeping the viewer invested in his investigation in the high rise apartments and subsequent attempts to escape after realizing shit had already hit the fan.…
