I just think this film is neat.
There's just something really special about a film that exudes originality and can realize its ominous storytelling with the budget it deserves. The craft on display in 'THE EMPTY MAN' is so meticulous and effective in its simplicity that you have to at least admire it. On the topic of technical merits, this has hands down one of the creepiest, most effective uses of sound I've come across. For a film that employs it so consistently, the sound design here needed to be top notch and it absolutely is. It's that sound that pulls us deeper into the murky depths of this ambitious tale which kicks off with banger of a 20 minute cold open that gives way to one of the most memorable horror stories I've watched in years. It's my first front runner for best Spooky Season 2021 features and I eagerly recommend you dive in knowing nothing about it.
P.S. Thank you to Dennis for putting this on my radar!
P.P.S. I've loved James Badge Dale since his day as Chase on '24' and on the criminally under-appreciated 'RUBICON' so having him lead this was a treat inside a treat.
