In the Mood for Love

In the Mood for Love ★★★★★

Let me begin at the ending. That final scene proved that Chinese films have better final scenes than the rest of the filmmaking world (based on this, A Brighter Summer Day, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). The final scene of this film is simply among the most beautiful and poignant ever filmed, and the film that precedes it matches that same level of beauty and poignancy. Every aspect of the film is truly something to behold. Wong Kar-wai directs brilliantly, the two central performances are excellent (making for two excellent central characters), the romantic tension is tangible, and the plot is a powerful one. The visuals and uses of color are stunning, the main score is memorable, and the film as a whole is simply one of the very best.
