Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi ★★★½

Reminds me a lot of Blade Runner 2049 in that it's remarkably ambitious, surprisingly anti-nostalgic, and better-looking than almost anything in theaters right now. Also reminds me a lot of 2049 in that it's overlong, occasionally cheesy and probably needed a rewrite or two.  I suppose this doesn't reach the emotional heights of Villeneuve's movie but damn if it doesn't make up for it with some of the best action scenes of the year.  Couple that with Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher turning in the best performances of their careers and you've got yourself the first Star Wars since 1980 that's both a pretty great blockbuster and a true original. Can't wait to see what Episode IX brings us.
