What a GREAT performance by Lucille Ball! This movie just feels so modern and current, especially the female characters. Arzner was so ahead of her time. Some of the imagery is practically grotesque. I love Pre-Code movies.
This movie totally has my number. Family history, urban history, theater, architecture, human interconnectedness, dedication to a place, class and race consciousness... all wrapped up in one gorgeous, deeply moving package. Fantastic debut.
Wasn't sure what score to give this film until I realized it was extremely effective because I definitely felt the crushing weight of mortality during one scene... like, full on lol and it still made me smile at the end!
