The last time I saw this I said it was flawed but on a re-watch, I am pretty certain I got that wrong. It's a stunning and visceral work of cinema that I am still aching to see on a big screen to take in the tension, the drama and the desperation of four men transporting explosive material through the wild jungle. The first half plays as political thriller and the second half will have you on the edge of your seat and a quivering wreck. The score by Tangerine Dream doesn't overwhelm but when it is to the fore, it beautifully enhances what's on screen. And that shot of the truck, with the lights going up, should be as iconic as the shot of Max Van Sydow under a fog shrouded streetlight in The Exorcist. This is what was possible with a true auteur in Hollywood but that it stands as a testament to the demise of auteur cinema there is a tragedy.
