Graham’s review published on Letterboxd:
"Uncle Lee, are you fundamentally unsound?"
Of that, there can be no doubt.
So many emotions. My lil' old heart is a complete mess after this. It really is an absolute steam train of a movie, and it smashes through the calm and peaceful scenery to deliver a compelling story of loneliness, depression, guilt, loss and hope.
I've not seen too much of Casey Affleck's stuff, but he is outstanding here. Alongside the ever broody Michelle Williams and a great supporting cast, the tone of the movie is dark, yet somehow weirdly optimistic. It certainly delivers, picking up Oscars for best actor and original screenplay plus a heap of other awards and nominations.
A real thought-provoker then, and certainly not an ideal watch if you're already in a dark place. As a piece of film full of amazing character acting and harsh social context, it was just what I needed tonight though. Brilliant.
