"You sure do like your boobs."
- Yotsuha Miyamizu
Body-swapping, Japan-style. This is so gorgeous, and quickly gets right to the nub of what we all think at some point in our lives (come on, admit it!)...
"I wonder what it would be like to be a girl" (or boy)
"Would I actually be able to avoid being a completely self-obsessed moron?"
This is a tale of two dreamers, connecting and changing their lives. I'll say no more as watching this with little context really helps.
There is a line that really struck me though:
"The cords represent the flow of time itself. The threads twist, tangle, unravel and connect again."
This one small piece of dialogue brought the whole thing together for me and re-emphasized that this is not simply another Japanese animated work of beauty.
It's stunningly gorgeous for sure (how on earth they illustrate snow like that is incredible), but this time the story is deep. It really makes you think about life, love, relationships and mortality. It's so beautiful, the only comparison I can come up with is 'Chungking Express drawn in pencil'.
