I may change my mind on a second viewing. There are parts where this film is sheer brilliance. There are long stretches of captivating magic, a marvelous blend of sound and vision that pushes boundaries and knows few recent parallels (with the obvious exception of Mother!) Filled with symbolism, perhaps some of which can only be truly dissected on repeat sessions, Guadagnino is simply trying too hard to be meaningful at times. Or maybe one just needs to go with it. Or maybe it's torture porn dressed up as high art. Either way, it's a 152 minute film that feels like a 152 minute film.
