alex 🍌’s review published on Letterboxd:
i spent the entire runtime of this movie marvelling at how well it managed to strike such an intricate, delicate, perfect balance between an almost dreamlike heightened level of camp with grounded, serious, emotional reality. everything about norma desmond's existence is over the top, from the funeral for a monkey to the mansion the size of a small island nation to every single gesture she makes. but between gloria swanson's performance and wilder's direction/writing it never actually feels unrealistic or too much, she feels real and i just got so drawn in to her spiralling delusions. this was a joy to watch from start to finish.
and holy fuck, what a finish!
