When They See Us

When They See Us ★★★½

A 4-part series by Selma-director Ava DuVernay about the boys who became known as the Central Park Five.

DuVernay does a great job with the first couple of episodes but the third episode becomes a bit muddled and unfocused as she tries to conclude too many stories of four of the grown men in one (leaving a fourth episode to tell the story of the fifth).

The acting is strong -- particularly by the mothers of these boys/men -- but I just wish DuVernay had approached their later lives differently. I likely shouldn't complain about it, though ... it isn't my story to tell. I shall not be disappointed with DuVernay ... I will be disappointed in our system (that is supposed to work).
