From the destruction of his hammer to the destruction of his entire home world, I appreciate how willing this movie is to remove some of Thor's most character defining traits. But the movie's also a breath of fresh air (or at least as much as one is possible in the MCU) in terms of its largely comedic tone. Even the conclusion of the final battle and the destruction of Asgard is treated as a dark joke about the fire villain's ultimate victory being revealed as powerful but petty single-mindedness. I don't think the movie is seriously exploring any of the more ambitious ideas it raises about the suppression of historical atrocities or even its more dramatic conflicts between Thor and Loki or Banner and the Hulk. But this is one of the few MCU movies where the jokes feel necessary and not obligatory to satisfy all marketing demographics.
