Riley’s review published on Letterboxd:
Imagine being so blinded by fandom/nerd groupthink that you believe this was a terribly made movie that did not capture the "essence of Star Wars" or whatever.
I'm glad that as I walked out, I only heard families telling each other that they loved it and one guy said he thought it was one of the best in the series. One mom said it was so intense, her stomach hurts.
As for my own thoughts, I'm still waiting on declaring a solid star rating because there are things that even I am iffy on. I do love the casino scenes, I think Rose is a lovely addition to the cast, and I still love Finn with all my heart. The fight in the red throne room and Holdo's destruction of the First Order ships take my breath away. I love that Rian Johnson gives a bit of a middle finger to everyone's theories and reminds us all that they are just theories. We need to let creators create.
Between this movie, Thor: Ragnarok, and Logan, I feel like 2017 was the year of studios realizing they can not keep giving audiences the exact same popcorn franchise entertainment that they expect. Risk and the unexpected is needed to keep franchises interesting.
