Diego Vera’s review published on Letterboxd:
Were you emotional the first time you drove in Sacramento?
Greta Gerwig’s vision through and through. So much passion comes through from her writing and directing, and it all works thanks to her. Story wise, this isn’t really anything new, but it’s not what she says, it’s how she says it. Consistently funny, so touching, always relatable, and superbly acted. So why am I not rating this any higher? Because it all sort of just flew by (no pun intended). And while this is something that I tend to LOVE in films, the editing here is just so quick and sharp. Maybe a little too much. Jumps from moment to moment and scene to scene before conversations have ended or songs have faded. And while I see what Greta was going for, making these all feel like loose memories highlighting random moments, I do wish she would’ve allowed scenes to linger for a little bit more. Let them sink in for a bit and allowed for a stronger grasp, but I’m hoping I’ll feel differently about that on a rewatch. All in I really did love this, and I’m so happy for Greta and her success. I can only see this going up for me on repeat viewings, and I know I will watch it again.
Side note: After months of waiting for this to come to my theater, they swapped it out at last moment so I just caved in and watched it online. I’m sorry.
