Diego Vera’s review published on Letterboxd:
I’ve been anxiously anticipating this rewatch, as I was curious to see how it would play around a second time without my huge expectations. Well, the main problem that I had during my first watch (how rushed it felt/how short the scenes were) was pretty much nonexistent this time. I felt that it flowed at a perfect pace and found the editing great for a change. The cinematography as a whole really stood out a whole lot more on a second watch as well, seeing it on a bigger screen. I think it’s really well done and some shoots in particular really stand out to me. Lady Bird and Julie walking around in the Fab 40s (the neighborhood with the big houses), Lady Bird and Danny in the grass, the prom scene, and a couple more here and there. That being said, I still just really enjoy the movie. I wish I could tell you that I love it or that it’s a favorite of mine, but when it comes down to it all, it’s just not really there. I think it’s great, charming, funny (though I definitely laughed more the first time around), and even emotional and relatable at points, but I’m just not head over heals for it like so many others are. Maybe it’s because I don’t find the characters entirely relatable (I can definitely relate to some aspects and relationships the characters have, but I don’t see myself in them), or maybe it’s because I’m not the target audience since I’m not a girl, or maybe it’s because of whatever else or maybe there’s no reason at all and I’m just looking for an excuse for not adoring it. Point is, as much I like it, I can’t call it a favorite or say that it’s perfect or anything. And despite my slight disappointment, it’s alright, because I still enjoy it and think it’s great, and I know that I will watch it again. So while I’m not infatuated with it like the rest of the world is, I’m still really happy for Greta and her success, and I look forward to seeing whatever she does next.
