Nomadland ★★★½

I wanted to watch this because of all the buzz it got, but honestly I did not expect to like it. It just didn't look like a kind of movie I'd like. I'm not very easily impressed by big landscapes and I often don't like when movies have little to no plot and just languish for the most parts, and these two things were my main impressions from the trailers and other media surrounding Nomadland. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was much more story than I expected. Actually this might be the perfect hybrid of being experimental, for example by casting "real people"/non-actors, and still telling a coherent story through a feature film. And the cinematography was undeniably beautiful, even though all the wide nature shots were slightly too much for me. I really liked the skies though.

Despite all of this I also feel the need to say that I'm still annoyed because Nomadland stole so many awards from Promising Young Woman. I know they're very different and hard to compare, but that's not even necessary to say that Promising Young Woman is a far better film in my opinion. I also feel like the topic is much more relevant. And I think it's crazy that the Academy is finally giving big awards to women from time to time, but they're still being sexist in doing so because they don't really award women-/feminism-oriented projects but rather traditionally male-oriented ones. I don't even know what to say about that. It simply has to end.
