The Third Murder

The Third Murder ★★★

Thoroughly disappointing: though the main character is phenomenally well-acted and treated with great delicacy, this message movie/legal procedural is soundly outclassed by Kore-eda's other 2018 release, the soaring, heartbreaking Shoplifters. This is all perfectly fine, and staging conversations as a nest of reflections is truly wonderful, but the questions aren't new, the answers aren't new, and the story framing those things is dithering and unfocused.
