For me the scares didn't hold up, which was fine (!) but I was really struck by the performances. Janet Leigh living the conflicting emotions around what she was about to do. Then, later with Norman, alternately compassionate then wary as his boyish and naive charm turned to a subtle menace, then to anger and finally, checking himself, back to that sweet charm.
Hard to imagine anyone but Anthony Perkins in this role, a guy who actually has you rooting for him to get that body hidden before anyone happens by! And that final shot of his face? Jesus. Hitchcock said make it creepy and he said hold my knife.
