Tim Daugherty’s review published on Letterboxd:
There’s no doubt James Wan is hitting his stride here.
He has an uncanny sense of timing when it comes to suspense. I’m not entirely sure how to explain it, but I remember Steve Martin talking about the precision of his stand-up comedy routine, and how his training as a magician taught him timing. For Martin every joke was surgical. I feel like Wan operates the same way behind the camera. There’s a purposefulness about it that feels highly calculated. I’d bet he’s in the editing room debating fractions of a second and each frame.
I’m still mildly annoyed by the credibility Wan gives Ed and Lorraine Warren with these movies. He ramps it up here with a scene involving Ed “The Fraud” Warren debating a skeptic on a talk show. The skeptic is presented as a pudgy buffoon, and worse, an “academic”! College is for dummies. Stupid books. #HailPaimon!
