It is such a shame that all I knew about the "Scream" movies was what I saw in parodies. These movies are great.
That trademarked "Scream" self awareness is on full display here. It seems like the movie takes established genre tropes and puts a unique spin on them. Its unpredictable. I also once again loved all the pop culture references. The mystery of who the killer is this time is just as interesting as in the first movie and the big reveal was alright. It isn't quite as scary as the original but it is every bit as exciting to watch. It's got tense as well as funny moments. In my opinion, there is one marvelous sequence that I did not see coming.
The big problem for me is that it feels quite slow getting into gear. The opening sequence was okay but the first 30 minutes felt a little uninteresting. I understand it was some much needed setup but people can find it boring.
If not for a weak first quarter, this might have been as good as the original. Still though, it's a lot of fun.
