BFI FLARE 2023 #2
I love film festivals because you’re often exposed to people and ideas that wouldn’t typically cross your screen. Jewelle is one such person I’d never encountered before. Think I was probably too fried to be properly invested in a talking-heads doc, and it never fully grabbed my attention (a bit on the dry side with its archive and graphics), but this will definitely find its audience.

My first feature of the festival! A warm, stylised comedy road trip that features some charming performances and tackles its themes with respect and honesty. Displays some lovely craft (made all the more impressive by its being fully independent). Despite some comedic beats falling flat, it’s one that ultimately wins you over in the end. A shoutout to my fellow passenger princesses and the bois that drive us everywhere.

I don’t even like rainbows.
