obviously not my sort of thing but just to prove that i’m not on a mission to give every single american war movie half a star, i’ll admit that this is definitely the best one i’ve seen so far. the writing was a bit shit and predictable but the performances were good and the sets very impressive. i also cared more about these men and their individual identities than i did in the last few movies, although the bar is on the floor on that one. i wasn’t too irritated or bored i guess, so good job!

fucking sucked in basically every way, but that’s pretty much what i’ve come to expect from ridley scott. alien was an outlier and should not have been counted. normally though his movies aren’t also this visually ugly on top of everything else damn. the high ratings on this are nuts.

much less oscar targeted than hotel rwanda and in that way more respectful. i was hesitant at first to watch a drama about fictional persons in this setting, uneasy with the idea of it being used as entertainment, but the educational content is balanced so well with the few graphic moments shown, it’s clear that shock value/misery porn wasn’t their intention. it manages to be utterly disturbing all the same.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

maggie q is so hot the whole star is for her, bc otherwise this is a mess. yet another one that makes me think if americans are THAT scared of other countries maybe they should stop holidaying to them idk. also obsessed with the idea that someone would get sick and then immediately move to a small island with ritual sacrifice rather than just idk somewhere with free healthcare?

  • Beasts of No Nation

    Beasts of No Nation

really can’t believe all the good reviews on this one. this is the most bleak misery porn war fetishising bullshit i’ve ever seen. why the decision to be so vague about the country or conflict? i’ll never understand. it’s not the first time i’ve seen a movie make that choice, but it’s absolutely the first time i’ve been so frustrated by it. completely robbed it of any kind of context or meaning, left the entire thing feeling utterly pointless. i’d…

    Hotel Rwanda

this movie is far from perfect, oversimplified and way too geared towards american audiences, but i get why. i’m also hard pressed to rate it down for any of that given that it probably created more empathy for this situation than the news ever did at the time. not for lack of trying though, and not that it matters anyway, too little too late.

one thing i will say, something i just found out about that really concerns me: this…
