Five stars for the General Themes’ running gag.
I managed to avoid reviews and spoilers for this film after seeing a trailer because I was looking forward to it so much. The cinematography looked amazing, and I have a soft spot for Soho. Sadly, the movie I had built up in my own mind was at odds with the one that Egdar Wright presented. Less 1960s Roman Polanski/Michelangelo Antonioni, more 1970s Doctor Who.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I don't understand the near universal love for this film. What I took away was: Sleazy dude pursues, and then rapes, a young woman after tricking her fiancé. The young woman decides that she rather liked it and revisits the location with her now husband on a regular basis.
Am I somehow looking at it wrong? Maybe Jean Renoir's intended film would have framed all of this properly but, as its stands, it just feels awful.
