It’s genuinely quite difficult to articulate...pretty much anything about Burning outside of it being one of the most gorgeous. layered, impactful feature films of the 2010s. What seemingly starts as a beautiful romantic drama switches firmly into a mystery thriller, and in both departments Burning excels with flying colors. I promise you that I didn’t fully absorb this movie on first viewing, and so it’ll likely take a few more to really get into my skin, but even without that luxury, Burning was an absolutely stunning work that is one of the main examples of the idea that maybe 2018 wasn’t as bad a year for cinema as I had previously interpreted it. A masterwork.
