Lake Mungo

Lake Mungo ★★★★★

This mockumentary from Australia really took me by surprise! I should say that I didn't really know much about it going in and I'm quite sure that's the best way to watch it.

The supernatural-ish story follows the Palmer family after the accidental death of their daughter. As the family deals with their grief in their own ways, posthumous revelations about the life of their daughter abound.
There are several points at which the plot twists in different directions and while ordinarily that would probably irritate me, it actually works to the films benefit here. The characters are interesting enough to care about and with each twist you get an idea of just how off guard the family would have been caught by each revelation.

It's definitely not a mainstream/gotcha/jump scare type of film which is very refreshing and a major reason I enjoyed it so much. Instead, it provides a continued sense of dread through some truly haunting images...the kind that come close to reality but where something is just not quite normal. It's creepy stuff!

Just how much this film scares you could depend on whether you watch it alone or with others. Even though I wasn't alone in the house, I watched this alone and I have to admit that I was a little apprehensive afterwards about going to the bathroom by myself. Oh, who am I kidding...I live for that feeling! And I did make it to the bathroom...I made my cat come with me...for protection...or something. Trust me, he's used to it at this point.

If you're looking for something different, something subtle yet genuinely frightening, this is a great one to watch.
